Elizabeth Garrett Anderson was designated as a Language Specialist School in 2000 and is currently in its second phase as a Language College.
Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Language College provides a centre for excellence in languages that benefits our pupils, local schools and the wider community.School journeys to Europe are organised in Year 8 and there is an annual trip to Germany in December.
Through its emphasis on languages the college celebrates values and builds on the strengths of its many bilingual learners and actively involves its ethnic communities in school life and formal education. After School Classes in KS4 enable students  to study addtional languages, following a fast track 2 year GCSE course.
The college creates a learning environment that allows students of all abilites and aptitudes to achieve their full potential in all subjects, not just in Modern Foreign Languages and Community Languages.
There is a language component in Business Studies and Health and Social Care GCSEs where students gain a qualification in Asset Language.  This certificate course is also available as an addtional course in KS4.
The college fosters a European and global perspective in its students by establishing links with Europe and beyond, through the use of ICT and school journes and emphasising the international dimension to every subject. The MFL ICT suite is open every lunchtime for students to use the available language learning programmes, to support their language homework, to develop their MFL ICT skills or joing our Global links programme which encourages our student to form e-mail friendships around the world, especially with our partner school in Magoba, South Africa.
All languages are taught in specialist teaching rooms with excellent facilities, including video conferencing and a dedicated MFL ICT suite.
Bengali and Turkish are on the main timetable and not taught as withdrawl subjects.
Year 11 students participate in a work related programme with our primary school partners, teaching primary school pupils a series of language lessons.
Students are encouraged to participate in a variety of celebrations of language and culture, especially the annual European Day of Languages, when pupils teach their own language to the rest of the school, the staff, primary schools and other visitors.  The students embrace this chance to teach the rest of the school community about their culture, costume and language.
Students are also taught part of their ICT curriculum in their second language lessons.
All students study 2 languages in KS3 and at least 1 in KS4.
In KS3 students study 2 of the following languages: Bengali, French, German, Spanish and Turkish. In KS4 there is an opportunity to study Arabic and Italian as well.
