We want each pupil to feel part of EGA as soon as possible and we do every thing we can to reassure students and parents during the move from primary to secondary.

Each student and her parents will be invited to school for an interview in early June. During this interview, they will be given a pack of details about the school, the uniform and asked to sign the Home /School Partnership agreement.

- Our Home /School partnership agreement explains what the school provides for each of its students, what is expected of EGA students and how parents can support the work of their daughter.

- The Head of year 7 liaises with Primary Schools regarding each student’s strengths and weaknesses. This informs us about the learning needs of each student.
|
- The Head of Year 7 will then decide which students go into which tutor group, ensuring that each tutor group has a balance of different abilities and talents.

- In July, students are invited to spend a morning at school meeting their tutors, classmates, the Headteacher and staff and sampling some lessons. Parents are also invited to a special parents evening which gives them the chance to meet subject teachers and form tutors and to ask any questions they might have.

- We are aware that parents and students are nervous about the change from their primary school to secondary. Students will have worries about how much homework they will get, whether they will find the work difficult, whether they will get lost and if they will make new friends. To make the first day special for year 7, they are invited in before the rest of the school. This means they can get know their way around the school quickly and get used to their new routine by themselves.

- The most important person for each new student is their tutor. Students meet their tutor twice a day at registration and they are the best person to contact about any problems. Parents should not hesitate to contact their child’s tutor or make an appointment to see them whenever there is something they wish to discuss. Ms Barnes, the Head of Year 7 will also be happy to speak to parents should the need arise.

- Students must have a sensible school bag, a pencil case containing pens, pencils eraser and ruler. Other useful bits of equipment are a calculator, coloured pencils/pens, a sharpener and a glue stick. Each student will be given a student planner that they should bring and use everyday to record homework. Parents and teachers can also use these to send notes. Parents are asked to check planners every week.

- In the first term, there is a Partners in Learning Day when parents, pupils and teachers can get to know one another and discuss how well the student is settling in.

- Parents will also receive a weekly newsletter from school keeping then up to date on school events and successes. Students are expected to deliver the newsletters home to their parents every Friday.

- Each student’s success at EGA is supported:
- by parents showing an interest in their child’s learning and homework.
- by students being on time to school and lessons, wearing the correct school uniform and having the right equipment for each lesson
- by school, parents and pupils working in partnership.
